Well there's a newer 4.16.7 kernel on it's way out, but there's nothing of note there for the RPi, the next one after than when it's built will have a slight improvement around memory use by the vc4 display driver. I think you've run into the traditional problem is it never works until you report the problem to IT at which point is always works.
