Question on how images are built

I am interested in saving my own images as I go along, and figure that 
there is some process used in making the compressed images we download 
from Koji or the various remixes.

Are these 'dd' images to file then compressed with xzcat?  Or something 
else.

I am trying to learn from what others are doing.
