Anything not ARMv7 (basically Cortex-A* and yes I've radically generalised that definition) has been EOLed by ARM. The only v5 platforms we ever supported was the Kirkwood (we briefly supported versatile as a qemu guest before moving to versatile express) and that only supports ddr1 memory which is now expensive and ARM made the Cortex-A5 platform which basically covered the last power/price window that Kirkwood covered so ARMv5 was a lot of work for diminishing return and users.

Tar balls cause a number of problems because if not used properly you lost all the special bits like xattr which are now used by a number of core dependences of the OS which made it problematic when trying to support newbies over IRC etc.

You can do a net boot using uboot and kickstart install and that's been tested for calxeda at least I believe. I think it might be a bit problematic specifying a dtb for boot but I'm not sure of the details.

For tablet style services there's been discussing means of injecting the image like you'd flash a new version of android but if someone is actually working on that I'm not aware of it.
