Thank you! That worked!

 Although I got a nice ascii train picture flying by the screen... so Im not sure im not hacked..

Just FYI in /lib/modules there is  3.1.9 kruft lying around.

You can install extra v6hl packages that aren't in the image (see the first message of this thread) by running
yum install -y --disablerepo=\* --enablerepo=fedora-rpfr packagename

I pulled in gdm to get the graphical login working and gnome-terminal for a terminal, but dev packages are probably there as well. Note the kernel used by this image is the same kernel as the v5 image.
