Awesome stuff with getting Fedora running o the Chromebook, guys - I may
just cave in and order one this weekend. :)
I just ordered a second Chromebook, which is coming next week. I'll rip
it apart and poke at a few things (not for release). Also, I ordered a
128GB SD Card to see how well that will work. As far as my non-crashing
storage, I'm using a 32GB 45MB/s Class 10 SanDisk card right now.
It's probably worth mentioning that virtually all SD cards do very
poorly when it comes to random-write performance, and the results vary
substantially between different models from the same manufacturer. You
may find a collection of tests I ran a while back useful - here's a link:
http://www.altechnative.net/2012/01/25/flash-module-benchmark-collection-sd-cards-cf-cards-usb-sticks/
(link at the bottom of the article)
Summary is that most SD cards do reasonably well (well enough to meet
their class rating) on sequential reads and writes, and on random reads,
but the random write performance is pretty dire.
One possible work around for the random-write performance issue is to
use a file system like nilfs2, but that comes with it's own set of
tradeoffs - and I don't know if it's enabled by default in the most
recent Fedora kernels - I haven't tried it in a while.
