"Install to Disk" on a live disc dd's the premade ext3/4 filesystem image to the hard drive and then resizes it. This is fundamentally the same installation path that we're talking about here. (In the Pi remix, for example, the dd to SD card is done by an installer script on another machine, and the resize is done on first boot.)
