alien --to-tgz and manual copying for me, but effectively yes :)
Problem with that is that I don't believe it runs all the associated scripts.
Oh, I know it doesn't - but I was mainly looking to get into the
filesystem, which was successful. Also helped verify my hardware hadn't
spontaneously broken.
Now that I have the filesystem up, I can (probably) install the rpm and
get on with it.
