Does the machine have a wired network port? The trick I use on my Kirkwood machines (love those gigabit ports) is to use nbd for /var/lib/mock and swap, with zram swap set to 1/2 the physical memory. With nbd backed by my storage box (13 SATA disks, ZFS), the disk I/O performance for intensive tasks such as mock building has improved by several orders of magnitude compared to even the fastest available SD cards when it comes to random-write I/O. That should cure your OOM without crippling the performance or killing your flash.
