mock with /var/lib/mock on NFS

Is there a way to make mock work with /var/lib/mock on NFS? I have
adjusted the permissions on both the server and the client to be as per
what is on the local file system, but I still get a permission error
when building packages. I don't have root_squash on the NFS export, and
as far as I can tell, the permissions on /var/lib/mock are the same as
on the local file system, yet on the local disk it works but on NFS it
doesn't.

Is there a way to work around this? mock builds on an SD cards suffer
from excessively long prep time due to slow random writes even on the
least slow SD cards.
