Nope, DKMS builds a kernel module as necessary (either at boot time or
at kernel update time).  It doesn't care what kernel you're using, only
that you have the kernel headers and a working compiler.  The
philosophical issue with DKMS is that it requires a build system and
that your end users are plugging stuff into their kernel.
