I'll leave my knee jerk smirky answer for the signature.

I don't know what the end goal is really. I'm just saying the
situation appears to be different now than it was 3 years ago in terms
of overall thinking about interface branding and what the implied
expectations on a _distribution_ are in terms of protecting the
original intent of the upstream project. We may not have the new
baseline expectations articulated succinctly yet..but I think they are
bouncing around in the collective head space. And I just want everyone
who seems to be keyed up over this to realize this and go the extra
mile to try to look at what identity and end-user experience means
from an upstream project pov.
