My personal two cents is that the best place to be is to be the choose-your-own-adventure platform- a robust and easy place to start a desktop, online-service, server, portable device, etc. Leave building the specialized tools to specialists, and (when appropriate) suck them back into the distro if/when it doesn't conflict with flexibility.
