From what I understand, that flavour of Ubuntu will be more free (*)
than Fedora (e.g. no firmware, no images/sound that don't include full
source), so such an announcement might backfire.
Even if it is more free relegating such freedom to a side project makes
it a move that is less beneficial compared to dealing with the
complexity of managing that primarily in a mainstream distribution.
Free software is not a niche.
