You might need to specify the -f option, I know there's an older
qemu-img version on Fedora 8 that does not autodetect the file format.

BTW, on my Fedora 8 box, it doesn't seem able to parse .vmdk:
qemu-img: Could not open '/home/moz/src/appliances/drupal-1.1.0/disks/root/root.vmdk'
(A strace shows it opening the file successfully, then giving this
error)
