Why does it feel like a kludge? It's just the network
configuration/enablement done the same way as in the
desktop/installed system. I don't dare to estimate how
users would see it - is it intuitive enough, isn't it too
much of surprise? I am talking about it with Máirín.
For me the applet solution seems pretty clean and simple,
but it is probably because I am already using Fedora.
We really need the functionality of NM Applet. The only way to
integrate the applet is to have something implementing
freedesktop.org systray specification - I am using the panel.
Using our own network dialog instead, we'd have to duplicate
what NM Applet does (e.g. listing available devices, listing
wireless APs, activating/deactivating a device ... it would be quite
a lot of code, probaly with hacks), something I tried to do with

but of course having better UI .
