I don't know that we gain a ton, but it makes things line up better with
how other OS's specify and identify the partitions.  Apple Bootstrap was 
definitely as a result of user requests... EFI just kind of came about and 
made sense in the same vein.  And it does seem to have at least somewhat 
reduced confusion.  So I'd personally lean towards keeping them, but
probably wouldn't argue it very strongly
