Which then leads to more special cases, more one-off code that doesn't

Sorry, I haven't fully inspected the patches, so this may already be the case.

Would it be possible to display a warning ... instead of blocking the install? This behavior or map well to the post-install passwd behavior when run by root. It warns ... but if you want to proceed ... you are welcome to.
