Maybe you have a non-standard /etc/redhat-release.  Try `linux
upgradeany` at the boot: prompt.


Thanks, I will try that tonight. FYI, my redhat-release says

% cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Linux release 9 (Shrike)

If anyone has more information about my other questions
(how to dry-run and generally debug anaconda behavior)
I am still all ears.
