What do you mean by latest updated kernels? Those from redhat or kernel.org?
Those from redhat (even severn) do not have the support for Enhanced SATA
mode. Only the new enterprise version has support. You need kernel
2.4.22-ac1 or higher or take a 2.4.2[23] and patch it with libata.
libata makes the SATA disk look like a SCSI disk.

No, just a newer kernel that has libata support. With this an installation
only takes about 14 minutes, in legacy modes it takes over an hour.
