I have 2 custom distributions. One is based on RH 7.1 with errata kernel 2.4.18-24.7.x. The other is based on RH 8.0 with kernel 2.4.18-26.8.0. I have an IBM x345 with 8GB memory and a Xeon Processor with multithreading enabled. The RH 7.1 installs the uniprocessor kernel, but the RH 8.0 installs the bigmem kernel (as it should). Does anyone know what would make the difference? Is there anything in the RH 7.1 distribution I could upgrade to get it to install the bigmem kernel itself? I could do it as a post installation step, but would rather not. Also, when I only had 4GB memory in the box, 7.1 still did the UP kernel, but 8.0 did the SMP kernel (due to multithreaded CPU). Same basic question, can I make the 7.1 distribution automatically recognize and install the smp kernel in this case? The apps the installs are supporting aren't ready for RH 8.0 yet, and my need to support 8GB may arrive before they're ready. Donald E.
