1.
Red Hat 8.0 will rescue and install on the laptop using the CD-ROM.  
Then I can run "cardctl ident" and find the following:

product info: " ", "NinjaATA-", "V1.0", "AP00"

cardctl version 3.1.22
kernel 2.4.18-14BOOT 


2.
Trying to boot my own 2.4.20-13.9BOOTmod I can see (it scrolls of the 
screen and there's no serial port to use a null-cable) that the loader 
tries to insert the ide-cd module but there are unresolved symbol 
errors.  Later the ide-cs module is loaded.  During any of the searches 
for the install tree on the CD-ROM "Alt-F3" shows "trying to mount 
device hdc"
