splash.lss keeps disappearing

While trying to rebuild the Red Hat Linux 8.0 discs, the splash.lss file becomes zero length. I thought that it was a bad copy the first time, but it seems to get overwritten. I found the revelant part in /usr/lib/anaconda-runtime/mk-images.i386: pngtopnm $BOOTDISKDIR/syslinux-splash.png | ppmtolss16 \#000000=0 \#c4c7ce=7 \#c60000=2 \#ffffff=15 \#7790c2=9 > $BOOTDISKDIR/splash.lss

I tried shortening it to:

pngtopnm syslinux-splash.png | ppmtolss16

but I still get the error:
/usr/bin/ppmtolss16: Premature EOF at (301,225) of (640,300)

I tried this on my 7.3 machine, and it worked just fine. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Forrest
