Problems with ACER Aspire 3 built-in audio

Hi,
I'm a bit of a dummy with alsa.

I've recently swapped my laptop for an ACER Aspire 3.
I've been using jack2 without problems previously, but when I set it to use the built-in audio
I get pop-up which suggest that my sample rates are wrong.
Typical example is using audacious to play my CD collection. Being mp3's from my CDs the sample rate is
44100sps, but audacious pops up a message to say I need to re-sample the files to 48000sps.
This has never happened previously. Jack is set to run at 44100, but it seems something is
failing to resample.
If I plug in a cheapo USB audio dongle it works fine, apart from a tick about every two seconds, but I'm
blaming the cheapness of the dongle for that - sounds a bit like a record with a scratch.

I'm running Debian 12, waiting for the dust to settle before upgrading as this a minor niggle, I can get by
using the dongle, but would like to get it sorted if it's a known problem.

aplay -l shows:

I tried forcing jack to use hwplug:sofhdadsp but got messages to say that I shouldn't use that as conversion is
automatic, and it still produced the above error.
