Well no interaction with the desktop (kde) was possible. You could see
the mouse pointer but it was not possible to click on any button.
Keyboard was dead, too.
Had to hard reset the machine.
Reading the error log I found following message (it's in german):

wurden durch das POLLOUT-Set geweckt, allerdings lieferte ein
anschließender snd_pcm_avail() den Wert 0 oder einen anderen Wert <

(No idea, why Thunderbird wraps the lines. It makes the logs hard to read.)
Sorry must be some misconfiguration.
I do not think, this should crash the system in any way though.
That's informative and reassuring to hear such a system crash was not
caused by ALSA.
Then it is probably a hardware failure. Maybe RAM.
My environment:
Gentoo Linux - 5.4.97-gentoo
As you use Gentoo, I suggest using the latest Linux release – currently
5.11, as – whatever the issue is – might already be fixed there.
