I'd probably have a look at gstreamer and see if there's a
"visualisation" plug-in that would do what you want.

Something like:

> gst-launch-1.0 filesrc location="${HOME}/music/by-track-artist/Santana/Let It Shine.ogg" ! oggdemux ! vorbisdec ! tee name=t ! queue ! audioconvert ! mux. t. ! queue ! audioconvert ! spectrascope ! videoconvert ! avenc_mjpeg ! mux. avimux name=mux ! filesink location=/tmp/test.avi

might do what you want.
