Even a relatively long delay could be inaudible and even if it should
be audible for musicians, it could be possible to handle this. Natural
musical instruments sometimes have a very long latency, too. The issue
caused by latency when using digital audio devices could be sync.
Assumed you have a device with analog IOs and ADAT. The ADAT is
connected to a device with AD and DA converters. The devices are synced
and share the same ALSA settings, but they might use different
converters, so the latency might differ minimal, completely inaudible
regarding a delay effect, but the phases of a stereo signal recorded or
played by each channel using the converters of the other device could
have impact to the sound quality, as soon as crosstalk is involved,
e.g. by listening using speakers instead of headphones.

Another issue are chains of digital gear. If you use 5 analog
series-connected guitar stomp boxes, it doesn't matter. If you use 5
digital guitar stomp boxes connected one after the other and each comes
with a quasi inaudible latency of 4ms, the 20ms could become a serious
issue.

To put it in a nutshell, there always is latency, even analog devices
at least suffer from the speed of light and in the end everything
suffers from the speed of sound. However, latency only becomes an
issue, as soon as there is a relation to something. Even a mono
microphone without latency caused by recording gear, could suffer from
the comb filter effect. This means that e.g. reflections from a wall or
from the floor are mixed with the direct sound by the microphone. The
reflections have some delay compared to the direct sound.

Ralf
