HP zBook 15 G2 laptop. Under windows (8.1), I also get no sound if I use the
generic intel hd audio driver - I have to get the specific one from HP's
site. Sound from speakers is heard regardless of whether I'm running linux
or windows with HP's or the generic driver and speakers are muted when
headphones are plugged in.

The codec is reported as Realtek ALC3228, which I can't find much info about
online and Realtek's own site doesn't list it, though google does show other
HP products with the same audio device. I've checked that the headphones
aren't muted in alsamixer. Beyond that, I tried playing with the model
option by writing to /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/modelname, then triggering a
reconfigure, but nothing worked.

Hey! I've solved that problem (Arch, 3.18.6-1-ARCH). Make the file
/etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf (and reboot):

alias char-major-116 snd

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias snd-card-1 snd-hda-intel

options snd-hda-intel id=Generic_1 index=0
options snd-hda-intel id=Generic index=1

options snd-hda-intel model=hp,headset-mic
