The PCM2707C datasheet says only 16-bit samples are supported.
(And only 32/44.1/48 kHz.  And no volume for the I²S output.)

And with nothing but adaptive playback supported, there's practically
nothing the audio driver could do wrong.

This might be a problem with the USB controller driver.  Which USB port
are you using?  Try a 2.0 port, and/or a USB hub, if possible.
