i just tried the DAC in a macbook pro. The cable and audio works. so we know the DAC and the cable works.

It could also be a bad USB connection.  Try it with the shortest USB
cable that will work for you (<= 2m regardless), and with the DAC
plugged directly into the computer (i.e. no external USB hub, or KVM or
whatever between the DAC and the computer).
