ALSA and Beats Audio

I am using Linuxfromscratch on an HP ENVY m6 Sleekbook, Model K0100dx.
This laptop has Beats Audio.

I have just installed and configured ALSA-1.0.27. I get no sound output
when I run <speaker-test>. Here is the output:

> speaker-test 1.0.27.2
>
> Playback device is default
> Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
> Using 16 octaves of pink noise
> Channels count (1) not available for playbacks: Invalid argument
> Setting of hwparams failed: Invalid argument

aplay -l

> **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
> card 0: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
> Subdevices: 1/1
> Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
> card 1: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 0: 92HD91BXX Analog
> [92HD91BXX Analog]
> Subdevices: 1/1
> Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

card 1 is set as default in ~/.asoundrc

Using alsamixer I can change the volume of the beeps coming from my
computer.

I am using xfce4 desktop and I currently have no other sound programs
installed except ALSA and gstreamer which was a dependency for some of
the other things that I did.

I discovered that there is a package called "hda-jack-retask" that has
become part of "alsa-tools" in Ubuntu. The documentation says that this
is necessary on a system that uses "Beats Audio" because of the default
way Linux handles laptop speakers. Using this tool I still have not
been successful.

What I have done is remap the pins as suggested in a "HowTo" here
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=105284

and then again run <speaker-test>. As I said, I have not yet been
successful in coaxing sound from my speakers.

I have run "alsa-info.sh" and have its output. If it's needed I'll run
it again and post the link. However, I'm beginning to think that this
package needs something "higher level" to work. I know that Ubuntu and
Debian install PulseAudio by default and am wondering if I need that
layer to produce my sound.

I will be grateful for any information, suggestions or directions.

Thanks,
Dan
