Virtual 12 channel device

Hi there,

I'm trying to create a virtual 12 channel device from 2 6 channel USB sound devices, as per http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Asoundrc#Virtual_multi_channel_devices

The point is to be able to use csound to drive all 12 channels, which will be hooked up to control a laser display. Don't ask, everything beyond the jacks is greek to me. :-)

Having dealt with a number of hardware problems, misconfigurations and an undead pulseaudio infestation, I can now ask for help with what I hope is a very simple problem before tearing my hair out and eating it with jam.

I have gotten to the point where using speaker-test to test the virtual device will play sound out of the all of the first card's channels, but none of the second card's channels.

Speaker-test will play sound out of all channels of each card when I test them independently.

My asound.conf is attached. The USB cards are cards 2 and 3, and I test the virtual device with either of these two commands, both of which produce the same disappointing result:

speaker-test -t pink -c 12 -D mt12
speaker-test -t pink -c 12 -D multi12

Any help would be greatly appreciated at this late and desperate stage of the project.

Thanks,
Sheldon.
