I didn't customize /root/.asoundrc, there isn't one as user and there is no /etc/asound.conf. "aplay -Dhw:1 /jet.wav" complained of format error saying available formats are S16_LE and S24_3LE. I had also tried with different samplerates. root@sdrbox:~# aplay -Dhw:1 -r44100 /jet.wav Playing WAVE '/jet.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 11025 Hz, Mono aplay: set_params:1081: Sample format not available Available formats: - S16_LE - S24_3LE root@sdrbox:~# aplay -Dhw:1 /jet.wav Playing WAVE '/jet.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 11025 Hz, Mono aplay: set_params:1081: Sample format not available Available formats: - S16_LE - S24_3LE "aplay -f S16_LE -Dhw:1 /jet.wav" and "aplay -f S24_3LE" still complain of format errors. "aplay -Dplughw:1 /jet.wav" works. root@sdrbox:~# file /jet.wav /jet.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 8 bit, mono 11025 Hz root@sdrbox:~# aplay -Dplughw:1 /jet.wav Playing WAVE '/jet.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 11025 Hz, Mono BTW ... it's on Kubuntu 12.10 x86_64.
