A final word for those that might encounter the same issue:

Yep, you were right, it was all nVidia's driver fault: Upgraded to
beta driver 304.22, and I have HDMI audio again.

"Fixed a bug that caused audio over HDMI to not work after restarting
the X server on some MCP7x (IGP) GPUs."

It seems not only "restarting" was fixed, but the whole HDMI audio for me.
