That was my impression too. However, I got the instruction to do so in 
another forum (something which didn't work).

OK, so there is no way to switch to a different sound card on the fly 
with ALSA?

I added the file ~/.asoundrc with the content above and logged 
out/logged in but the internal sound card is still used. Is there a log 
which ALSA writes to?
