Hmm, that doesn't seem to work:

$ cat /etc/asound.conf
defaults {
    ctl.card PCH
    pcm.card PCH
    pcm.device 7
}
$ speaker-test -c 6 -t wav

speaker-test 1.0.25

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels
WAV file(s)
ALSA lib conf.c:1017:(parse_value) card is not a string
ALSA lib conf.c:1686:(snd_config_load1) _toplevel_:3:5:Unexpected char
ALSA lib conf.c:3406:(config_file_open) /etc/asound.conf may be old or
corrupted: consider to remove or fix it
Segmentation fault
$

However, if I try this:

$ cat /etc/asound.conf
defaults {
    ctl.card 0
    pcm.card 0
    pcm.device 7
}
$ speaker-test -c 6 -t wav

speaker-test 1.0.25

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels
WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2048 to 8192
Period size range from 1024 to 1024
Using max buffer size 8192
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 1024
was set buffer_size = 8192
 0 - Front Left
 4 - Center
 1 - Front Right
 3 - Rear Right
 2 - Rear Left
 5 - LFE

It almost works... However, I only hear sound from the two front speakers
-- not from all six -- the other four just give me silence.

Okay, that makes sense, assuming I can get the above to work.
