asoundrc to reduce output volume

Hi all,

I am having a problem that whenever I startup skype, it is much much louder than my other applications and it almost deafens me. Skype on linux does not have its own volume control; so I was wondering if there were a simple way to use my asoundrc to create a virtual output device or plugin where the volume is reduced by like 50%, and then configure skype to play through that device?

I have played with my asoundrc a decent amount in the past, but I never feel like I understand exactly what I am doing.

Thanks in advance,
J
