I can confirm that behaviour. I wonder, wether there is an alsa solution to this, as I would like not to install or even use pulseaudio. Wasn't dmix supposed to be able to handle this? Until recently I was working around with jack for vlc, but since vlc 2 this does somehow not work anymore.
