Interface mixup problem

I am experiencing some problems with my sound and midi interfaces. I find in
order to keep it all working I have to unplug my USB midi interface (a
MidiSport 2x2) before booting up. If I don't the MidiSport is wrongly
identified as the default sound interface.

If I boot up without the MidiSport plugged in then aplay -L gives this list:

null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
default:CARD=io2
    io
    Default Audio Device
front:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
iec958:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output

and sound output through the io2 works OK (although I don't understand why
it lists all that "surround" stuff which is a capability the Alesis IO2
doesn't have).

If I then plug the MidiSport in aplay gives this list:

null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
default:CARD=io2
    io
    Default Audio Device
front:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
iec958:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output
default:CARD=M2x2
    Default Audio Device

and sound works OK through the io2 and midi works OK through the MidiSport.
But if I leave the MidiSport plugged in before booting up then this is what
aplay -L reports:

null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
default:CARD=M2x2
    Default Audio Device
default:CARD=io2
    io
    Default Audio Device
front:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
iec958:CARD=io2,DEV=0
    io
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output

and sound doesn't work, Is there a way to stop the MidiSport being
identified as a sound card?

Thanks very much
