These "HD-Audio Generic" mean that your kernel doesn't know the hardware.
You should update to a newer distribution.

Card 0 is your built-in audio device.  Card 2 is the sound for the GPU's
HDMI output.  Apparently, Gnome shows the mixer controls for card 2.
