I accidentally send this as a reply to Clemens, instead of the list, whoops! Thanks Clemens. I don't think the new kernel has actually removed support for the sound card, it's just a symptom. ALSA's just not working. Alsa-lib are a different version than the kernel modules (1.0.22 instead of 1.0.24), maybe that's the reason? I've downloaded the snapshots, and alsa-drivers installs now, and so does alsa-libs. So I'm going to recompile the kernel, now that I've applied the alsa-drivers package, and install the new libs and firmware, and see if that helps.
