That is the problem from the subject of this email:  It isn't obvious
how to determine which one *is* the right one. :)  I also knew that the
snd modules got knocked out somehow.  Don't know how that happened either.
I was following the instructions from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449
(the Ubuntu "comprehensive sound problem solutions guide") and they disappeared.
