Yes, optical cable to a receiver.  Just double checked the
connections, and even swapped with the cable box.  All these work
fine.

Nothing.  Silence.  Tried 2 different files:

$ aplay -D plug:spdif /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit
Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
$ aplay -D plug:spdif /storage/recordings/save/SURROUNDTEST_DD_640.wav
Playing WAVE '/storage/recordings/save/SURROUNDTEST_DD_640.wav' :
Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo
