It depends on the HDMI device. For my video card, the specification of the sound that travels over that wire is pretty strict. ONLY AC3, only 44.1kHz, only stereo / 2 channels, only... And it does work if all criteria is met. But I much prefer to use the analog audio (lossless / PCM). But a single wire does have it's uses. I imagine that it's in your configuration somewhere to make what you're wanting happen. .asoundrc? pauvcontrol? Just be aware of the specifications of your gear. You have two of them technically, sending and receiving, and they may not match, but on the lowest of lowest common denominators.
