Is the file /usr/bin/alsamixer present, or /sbin/alsa ?

Or the /usr/share/alsa directory?

You should have these or equivalents IIUC.

I'm also fairly new at this, but if you can't find such files or
directories then maybe alsa hasn't been installed (correctly).

You might also try running this to see what it reports.
