No, i didn't have sound daemons when i started and it didn't work 
either. i added pulseaudio thinking it would help me with the surround 
issue but it didn't.

Using VLC won't help either as adding new layers of software only

if speaker-test doesn't work nothing else will

can you confirm that when you run
speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6 -l1 -twav
you get a different sound played in each speaker?

i realized that even in my livecd it never worked. i was confusing the 
output. after i found out about it i just thought this chipset was not 
supported in my version of alsa (1.0.23) but now that you say it works 
for you i'm curious again

if your speaker-test does work in each individual channel, would you 
mind sending me your alsa-info output so i can compare it to mine. what 
version of alsa are you using?
