alsamixer seems to work without errors, but trying to play a sound using 
aplay yields the following output:

ALSA lib pcm_direct.c:866:(snd1_pcm_direct_initialize_slave) 
snd_pcm_hw_params_any failed
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to initialize slave
aplay: main:608: audio open error: Invalid argument
