5.1 audio on the Hercules Muse Pocket USB?

Hi list,

I have a USB sound card that I want to get 5.1 sound working on.
Specifially, it is a Hercules Muse Pocket USB, recognised by lsusb with
the correct name.

I have tried many different suggestions for asound.conf, but none seem to get
me more than 2 channels, so I think the problem lies deeper. Alsamixer
also displays only two channels. The card uses the generic USB-audio driver,
and 2 channels work fine.

What is interesting, is that cat /proc/asound/card1/stream0 gives me:

Playback:
 Status: Stop
 Interface 1
  Altset 1
  Format: S16_LE
  Channels: 2
  (...)
 Interface 1
  Altset 2
  Format: S16_LE
  Channels: 6
  (...)

Can I somehow "force" the card to use the second Altset, which has 6
channels? What are these Altsets anyway? Some more info:

aplay -l:
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel] (...) # The built-in card
card 1: Audio [USB Audio], device 0:USB Audio [USB Audio]
 Subdevices: 1/1
 Subdevice#0: subdevice #0

dmesg shows some generic info about the bus, and then
usbcore: registered new interface driver usb-snd-audio

Any and all help is appreciated, and I am happy to provide more
information.

Sincerely,
Åsmund Ervik
