Thank you for your suggestion, I'll give it a try. However would that
be any different from explicitly specifying that device like I already
did in aplay -D hw:1,3 test.wav ?

I've seen some patches floating around on the net, but I would assume
that they apply to an earlier kernel as the g6a251b0 kernel at least
detects my HDMI audio output device.
