serial port and virmidi?

I have a ten year old Yamaha keyboard with a 'TO HOST' serial port
connected to my computer's serial port. 'cat /dev/ttyS0' prints junk
when I play the keys.

How do I wire up ttyS0 as a midi device? I assume it can connect to
virmidi somehow. I 'amidi -l' shows me "Virtual Raw MIDI" interfaces,
but I can't make arecordmidi or aplaymidi do anything with them.

If it's not possible I'm willing to spend the $10 on a MIDI to USB
cable, but I'm not sure how to make that work either. Does that just
show up as a working MIDI interface automatically?

Thanks.
