Dear ALSA users, please tell me if I should open a ticket for this issue in the ALSA bugtracking system. Using PulseAudio (PA) playing sound works without problems but running a program accessing the microphone (`gnome-volume-control`, `empathy` doing voice calls, …) causes high CPU loads of PulseAudio. I reported this to the PulseAudio tracker as ticket #758 [1]. Debugging this further this led to the following debug message by PA [2]. $ pulseaudio -k # `autospawn = 0` in `~/.pulse/client.conf` $ LANG=C pulseaudio -vvvvv # `gnome-volume-control` started in other terminal. ConsoleKit messages removed. […] I: alsa-source.c: Increasing wakeup watermark to 361.50 ms W: ratelimit.c: 52071 events suppressed D: memblock.c: Pool full D: memblock.c: Pool full D: memblock.c: Pool full D: memblock.c: Pool full I: alsa-source.c: Overrun! […] Searching for this error message on the WWW suggested that this is related to the ALSA driver and somewhere it was suggested to load the module with the option `position_fix=1`. $ more /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf options snd_hda_intel position_fix=1 After this change programs accessing the microphone do not cause high CPU loads anymore [3]. Is that the correct way to fix this problem? Is a quirk for my chip needed to enable this option automatically? I did not find a section for VIA chips in `HD-Audio-Models.txt` [4] as suggested on the »Help To Debug Intel HDA« wiki page [5]. But this appears to be not needed anyways since I am actually using a Realtek ALC662 codec chip [6]. I am using Debian Sid/unstable with the following Linux kernel $ uname -a Linux name 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jan 10 07:51:13 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux but a 32-bit userspace with `libasound2` 1.0.21a-1 installed. You will find further information about my system at the end of this message.
